Level 3 Physical Education
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr J. King.
The content of the course is approximately 40% practical and 60% classroom based using a variety of teaching methods. Time beyond the classroom will be required for trips and field work practicals. Activities completed will be drawn from rock climbing, badminton, examining trends in physical activity in New Zealand; and devising strategies to stay active beyond school and in later life.
Course Costs:
A course enrichment opportunity for AS91501 and AS91504 exists where students can attend a four day rock climbing trip to Wanaka which would require a payment of $400 (estimate) before commencement of the trip.
Course Overview
Term 1
Critical Thinking Unit then:
Achievement Standard 3.7 + 3.4 Rock Climbing Unit (7 Credits combined)
– Learning to climb and developing skills
– Risk Management, site evaluations, RAMS forms,
– Devise safety management strategies
Term 2
Achievement Standard 3.1 Strategies for Life-Long Learning in Physical Activity (4 Credits) then:
Achievement Standard 3.3 (and 3.4) Futsal or Badminton context (4-7 Credits)
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a performance improvement programme in Futsal or Badminton.
- Biophysical principles, functional anatomy, biomechanics, skill learning, sport psychology
- Socio-cultural factors, S.P.E.E.E.C.H
Term 3
Achievement Standard 3.3 (and 3.4) Futsal or Badminton context (4-7 Credits) continued.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a performance improvement programme in Futsal or Badminton.
- Biophysical principles, functional anatomy, biomechanics, skill learning, sport psychology
- Socio-cultural factors, S.P.E.E.E.C.H
then:
Achievement Standard 3.5 Physical Trends and Issues (4 Credits)
- Examine a current physical activity, trend, issue and its impact on New Zealand Society
- Questioning and challenging assumptions around physical activity and its impacts
Term 4
Achievement Standard 3.5 Physical Trends and Issues (4 Credits) continued
- Examine a current physical activity, trend, issue and its impact on New Zealand Society
- Questioning and challenging assumptions around physical activity and its impacts
Recommended Prior Learning
Students will be expected to have gained Achieved or better in each of the PE Achievement Standards PE 91328 and PE 91330 at Year 12.
Or students can enter this course if they gained a Merit or Excellence endorsement in Level Two Physical Education.
In addition, a strong performance in a Year 12 Science subject would be beneficial, and a genuine interest in sport and physical activity accompanied with a good level of fitness would be expected.
