Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms B. Murphy

This course caters for those who intend to go on to tertiary education and those students who are on a vocational pathway. It is not a literature-based course. There are four internal Achievement Standards covering writing, the creation of a visual text, an oral presentation and close viewing of a visual text. These standards can be adapted to suit the student's career aspirations. Students will sit one external standard (Response to unfamiliar texts) and may also choose to respond to the film externally.


Course Overview

Term 1
The first term is dedicated to viewing two films by the same director, Baz Luhrmann. Students will study Moulin Rouge! for the external examination. This film will then be compared to The Great Gatsby for the film internal standard.
The first piece of writing for the portfolio will be submitted.
Response to unfamiliar text skills will also be worked on this term.

Term 2
The focus in this term will to be to continue with the writing portfolio and to produce a short film.
Response to unfamiliar text skills will also be worked on this term.

Term 3
Students will present a six-minute seminar. The writing portfolio is due at the end of this term.
Response to unfamiliar text skills will also be worked on this term.

Term 4
Preparation for the external examination.

Equipment/Stationery

Refill paper.
Own laptop would be useful but not essential.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students must have University Entrance literacy.
