Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Dalgarno.

This course is designed to give a broad introduction to a variety of calculus topics, in preparation for university study, in particular for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.

Topics covered may include Differentiation, Integration, Complex Numbers, Trigonometric Equations.

Students taking Physics or Chemistry should take this course.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will start the term by consolidating all their essential Algebra skills from Year 12 whilst also being briefly introduced to Level 3 Complex Number Algebra. The second half of the term will be spent studying the only Internal Achievement Standard on Trigonometric Modelling

Term 2
Students will complete the topic on Complex Number Algebra which they started in term 1 and will move on to the second External Achievement Standard on Differentiation.

Term 3
Students will complete the topic on Differentiation which they started in term 2 and will move on to the third External Achievement Standard on Integration.

Term 4
Students will spend this term consolidating and revising all their skills from the three External Achievement Standards before sitting the NCEA Examinations in November. It is highly recommended that the students purchase the D and D revision booklets for revision during this term.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students are recommended to have NCEA Level 2 Mathematics Achievement Standard passes in Algebra, Graphs, Calculus, and Trigonometry (with Merit or above grades in Algebra and Calculus) or with HOD approval.

Equipment/Stationery

It is expected that students will have their own pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, two 1E5 or 1E8, and a graphics calculator. It is strongly recommended that they purchase the Nullake EAS Level 3 Calculus Workbook. It is also highly recommended that students purchase the D and D revision booklets for revision in term 4 in preparation for sitting the final NCEA External examinations in November.

Pathway

This course leads on to tertiary courses which include Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture, Physics, Chemistry, Veterinary Science, Economics and Finance.
