Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss E. Jeffery.

This course focuses on the Statistical Achievement Standards, so by gaining Merit or above it prepares students well for Year 13 Statistics.  Topics studied may include Inference, Experiments, Simulations, Probability, and Networks.

If you intend on doing a Teaching Course in the future this course would give the required Level Two mathematics credits.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will complete two Internal Achievement Standard during this term on Networks and Simulations. If time permits then they will also start the third Internal Achievement Standard on Statistical Inference.

Term 2
Students will complete the Internal Achievement Standard on Statistical Inference and will also complete the fourth Internal Achievement Standard on Experiments.

Term 3
Students will start studying the only External Achievement Standard on Probability and will sit a school practice examination for this topic in the middle of the term.

Term 4
Students will spend this term consolidating and revising all their skills from the External Achievement Standard on Probability before sitting the NCEA Examination in November. It is highly recommended that the students purchase the D and D booklet for revision during this term.

Recommended Prior Learning

It is recommended that students have numeracy before entering this course but adjusts can be made to cater for students who do not.

Equipment/Stationery

It is expected that students will have their own pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, two 1E5 or 1E8, and a graphics calculator. It is strongly recommended that they purchase the Walker Maths workbook for Networks and Probability. It is also strongly recommended that students purchase the D and D booklets for revision in term 4 in preparation for sitting the final NCEA External examination in November.

Pathway

This course can lead students onto Tertiary courses which include Sciences, PE, Geography, Business and Teaching, Insurance, Research and Development careers.
