This course will be a hybrid course that starts the year off completing a rock climbing course for NCEA Level Three credits as an outdoor education practical but also has the option of a risk management report for extra NCEA Level Three credits.
In Term Two students will work their way through planning, organise and lead outdoor activites that they would like to run as offiste pracitcal sessions for the class. This will be mostly Unit Standards based work. Students will also have the option of completing NCEA Level Three work on how to devise strategies to stay physically active in the future.
In Term Three, students will have the option to attend the Year 12 Outdoor Education ski trip but will be able to apply their planning, orgainsing and leadership to the ski trip for the chance to be assessed against Level Three Unit Standard work.
This course also works closely with Ms Duncan to provide other unit standard opportunities for students to gain credits such as coaching courses and other opportunities that present themselves throughout the year.
Course Overview
Term 1
Achievement Standard 3.4 (AS91501) + 3.7 (AS91504) Rock Climbing Unit (7 - Level 3 NCEA Credits combined)
– Learning to climb and developing skills
– Risk Management, site evaluations, Risk Analysis forms,
– Devise safety management strategies
Course Costs:
A course enrichment opportunity for AS91501 and AS91504 exists where students can attend a four day rock climbing trip to Wanaka which would require a payment of $400 (estimate) before commencement of the trip.
Term 2
Outdoor Education Level Three Unit Standards:
Plan, organise and lead an outdoor activity.
Term 3
Outdoor Education Level Three Unit Standards:
Plan, organise and lead activities around Skiing and Snowboarding while attending the Year 12 Outdoor Education ski trip.
Term 4
Throughout the year students can also opt into Level Three Achievement Standard options:
Achievement Standard 3.1 Strategies for Life-Long Learning in Physical Activity (4 Credits)
and/or
Achievement Standard 3.5 Physical Trends and Issues (4 Credits)
- Examine a current physical activity, trend, issue and its impact on New Zealand Society
- Questioning and challenging assumptions around physical activity and its impacts
Recommended Prior Learning
Ideally, students should have been involved at Level Two Physical Education and/or Outdoor Education.
Students should have a strong interest in Physical Education, Sport and the Outdoors in general.

Devices are not essential but highly recommended - please refer to the school specification requirements for a preferred device.
