11NLC is designed for students who have not met the Level 1 requirements for Numeracy and Literacy in Year 10. In this course students will spend two hours per week focusing on Numeracy and two hours per week focusing on Literacy. For numeracy the students will cover the content in the seven strands of the New Zealand Curriculum to prepare them for the co-requisite examination. Those who pass the co-requisite examination in the first sitting will then go on to study an Internal Achievement Standard from Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics. For literacy, the students will work on reading comprehension strategies and writing activities to improve their structure and accuracy. Those who pass the co-requisite examination in the first sitting will work on English Achievement Standards.
Term 1
In Term 1 for Numeracy co-requisite we will be working on the Measurement, Number and Geometry strands of the assessment task.
The focus for the reading co-requisite will be based around reading a variety of texts that will widen the students’ awareness of our world. A variety of strategies will be taught such as: making connections, asking questions, identifying purpose and audience, visualising events, determining text importance, making inferences, and synthesising information to make new thoughts.
For the writing co-requisite the focus will be on grammatical structures, common errors and mechanical skills (spelling and punctuation). Progressing from this will be writing structured pieces for a variety of purposes.
Term 2
In Term 2 for the Numeracy co-requisite we will be working on Algebra, Statisitics and Probability.

At the end of this term the students will have the first attempt at the Numeracy and Literacy co-requisite CAA.
Term 3
In Term 3 for Numeracy the students who achieved attempt one will work on AS91945. Student who gained a not achieved will be revising the strands in preparation for attempt two.
In Term 3 for the Literacy the students who achieved attempt one of both reading and writing will work on English achievement standards. Students who gained a not achieved will be revising through the content in preparation for attempt two.
Term 4
In Numeracy, the students will be assessed on AS91945 if completing that or they will be completing attempt two of the Numeracy co-requisite.
In Literacy, the students will be assessed on the achievement standards or they will be completing attempt two of the Literacy co-requisite.
2 x IE5 or IE8 workbooks, clear plastic ruler 300mm, pencil, eraser, ball-point pens - red, blue and black. Scientific Calculator.
Optional Workbooks - Walker Mathematics Numeracy Essentials. This is highly recommended as it is a valuable resource to supplement classwork.
