Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Darling.

This course requires students to extend their skills acquired from NCEA Level 1, and is divided into 

Solo Performance and Group Performance, Composition, Music knowledge of specific pieces and styles, Research, Aural and Score Reading. Achieving between 16-24 credits is expected in this course.  

This is an academic course with options for a practical based course. Each student will work on an individual programme that is designed to their strengths and interests. Your portfolio of work will form the bases for all your assessment. All students must be learning a musical instrument and must attend lessons either through school or outside as a compulsory aspect to this course. 

Involvement in the co-curricular programmes and events are expected and highly recommended. 


Course Overview

Term 1
Term 1 is focused on building your composition, theory and musical knowledge. One lesson each week is dedicated to your external examination knowledge and skills. One period is dedicated to your solo performance. The remaining time is spent on unit work and assessment material.

The assessment opportunties.
Investgate NZ Aspect and Instrumentation - if chosen, will be assessed in this term.
You will have your first solo performance assessment opportunty at the end of the term. It is highly encourgeled that you have lessons on your chosen instrument.

Term 2
Term 2 will continue the academic focus from Term 1. This term group performance becomes a focus. This can be in the form of a Chamber music group, Rock Quest, Big Sing, or other similar events.

Your first composition will be due at the end of the term and your second opportunty for Solo Performance will also take place.

Term 3
Term 3 will spend the first portion of the term continuing to develop your skills and put into practice the material needed for the practice exams.

Your final composition and performance will take place at the end of the term.

Term 4
Term 4 is focused on your External examination and any other individualised assessments required.
