Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

A strong understanding of computer programming is required for this course. If a student has not taken Computer Science in Year 12 but has previous programming experience and strong problem-solving skills, they may be accepted into the course. This approval would be needed from the teacher in charge of Computer Science.


Year 13 Computer Science is an advanced course, following on from the Year 12 course, offering NCEA Level Three achievement standard credits. A significant proportion of the course involves programming, using the C# language, to an advanced object orientated level. Students will continue learning their project management skills as they work on their programming projects. They will also investigate areas of Computer Science and focus on one topic from: computer graphics, complex systems, computer vision, big data, formal languages and network communication protocols. Depending on the cohort, there may be database development integrated into the course.
